After the awards were presented, everyone enjoyed the usual New Orleans after the race party. Cool popsicles, lot of water, quick energy snacks and bananas. Then the New Orleans Track Club rolled in the beer -- not a keg but they brought in a beer TRUCK. This was followed by the New Orleans Track Club's boom box -- they drove in a TRUCK with large speakers mounted on top. Racewalkers from the New Orleans Track Club are very friendly and have a party after every event. If anyone goes to New Orleans, contact the New Orleans Track Club for their calendar of events in the New Orleans area!

June 12, 1999

The 1999 Portland Masters Track Club Racewalk was held at Mt. Hood Community College on a 400 meter outdoor track in Gresham, Oregon on June 12, 1999. It was a very warm and sunny day with brutal temperatures on the track at the noon start time for the racewalk.

The judged racewalk events were 5,000 meters for women and men. There were three qualified judges.

There were a large number of participants. Due to the brutal temperatures at race time, two participants did not finish due to the temperatures.

Racewalkers Northwest did a sweep of all of the racewalk divisions. The Racewalkers Northwest participants, finishing position in their respective division, their finishing time and pace per mile are:

All of the Racewalkers Northwest members that finished were first in their respective division. The gold medals received as the award for their first place finish were appreciated.

Several members mentioned that the brutal conditions and the sensation of your legs turning to jello were a good "warm up" for the 126 mile Portland to Coast Relay Racewalk in late August. Again this year, Racewalkers Northwest has two teams in the Portland to Coast. The teams were 1st and 4th overall in last year's Portland to Coast and are looking forward continuing to improve on their winning times and winning their respective divisions again this year.
