The 19th Annual Dream of Roses was a 2 mile of racewalk for only women.
The event was held at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, OR with the start time of racewalk at 9AM.
The day was cool and comfortable with sun trying to burn the clouds away. The course was on the flat surface streets surrounding the college.
There were 8 participants in the racewalk. The Racewalkers Northwest members, finishing positions and finishing times were:

Inaddition to Racewalkers Northwest members participating in the racewalk, Marie VerMeer, Doug VerMeer and George Opsahl were volunteers.
1999 was the first year that the Tortoise and Hare Racewalk was held. Based on the
positive responses by the participants, it will be held for many years to come.
The Tortoise and Hare Racewalk is a relay with two people on each team. The first team member racewalks one mile
and tags the other team member to complete the second and final mile of the event. The expected times for each team
determines when the first person from each team starts with the teams with the longer then expected times
starting earlier and the fastest teams starting later. The event should be a finish with
all the teams crossing the finish line at nearly the same time.
The temperature at the start time was cool and comfortable at 38 F degrees with a breeze on the back stretch of the track.
There were 4 teams in the event. The members on each team and their time for the two miles were:

Mark your calendars for next year's Tortoise and Hare Racewalk....it is a great way to enjoy a fun and competitive event. After the racewalk, everyone ( volunteers, spectators and racewalkers )
participated in a 1 mile fun walk. And as usual, after the event we all enjoyed some food which for this event
was brought as a pot luck breakfast by the participants, volunteers and spectators.
The 1999 Portland Marathon and 5 Mile Racewalk events took place in Portland Oregon on October 3, 1999.
The events were men and women grouped for the Marathon and 5 Mile racewalk.
The temperature in the morning at start time was cool and comfortable at 49 F degrees....perfect weather.
There were 8 qualified racewalk judges.
There were a total of 45 participants.

Many bands along the course motivated the participants. The results were several PR's by the participants.
The 1999 One Hour Postal Racewalk event took place at Banks High School on a new 400 meter outdoor track.
The event is an age group one hour timed and judged racewalk. The results are mailed and compared to other One Hour Postal participants throughout the country.
The temperature in the morning at start time was cool and comfortable....perfect weather.
There were 3 qualified racewalk judges: Jim Bean, Marie VerMeer, Anne Whitaker
There were a total of 13 participants. One participant DNF. There were no DQ's.

One of the best parts of the event was the volunteers. With the calling of the split times, the help of lap counters and the volunteers that
measured the final distances, the participants were able to focus on their best performance.

The 1999 Edmonton Canada Racewalk event took place in Edmonton Canada on Saturday September 25, 1999.

The 1999 Portland to Coast 126.5 mile Relay Walk event started in Portland Oregon and followed a course
through the streets of Portland, through the mountains and finally arriving at the Pacific Ocean in Seaside, Oregon.
The event is limited to 400 teams in a relay format with strict rules about the team members, the order they participate
and adding significant time to teams that run.
The Portland to Coast Relay started on a very warm and somewhat humid day. By the end of the relay, it was cool
overcast with a mist in the air at the finish line on the beach at Seaside.

Caminata USA/Racewalkers NW and Racewalkers Northwest teams set new records in the categories that they participated.
In addition, Caminata USA/Racewalkers NW set a new overall record with a time of less then 20 hours.
Congratulations to all members of all teams for their efforts and achievements.
The 1999 Dual Duel Racewalking event took place in Milwaukie, Oregon at Rex Putnam High School on an excellent outdoor track.
The event is an open 10 mile racewalk with two members per team doing alternating one-quarter miles.
The evening was cool with a light rain at the end of the event to keep the participants cool.

The 1999 WAVA Racewalking events took place in Gateshead England during August 1999.
Some of the world's best racewalkers participated performing at more then 90% of their age grade level.

The 1999 Northwest Regional Championship for racewalking were held in Seattle, Washington at the West Seattle Stadium on Saturday July 17, 1999 on a 400 meter outdoor track over looking the sound and downtown Seattle.
It was a cool day with drizzle on July 17, 1999 at the start of the race.
There were 14 participants in the judged 5, 000 meter racewalk. The three qualified judges were L. Robertson, J. Kavadas and C. Engelhardt.
There was also an additional scratch and there was one DNS.
