Eugene Legend
May 7, 2000

The 2nd annual Eugene Legend was held in Eugene Oregon at Hayward Field on May 7, 2000. The Eugene Legend is a 10KM road course with the start and the finish at Hayward Field.

The temperature at the start time was 50 F with a partly cloudy sky.

The Eugene Legend is an Open Event which gives the participants the chance to compete against everyone regardless of their age. After doing a 20KM to qualify for the Olympic Trials the day before, Ian Whatley finished 1st with a very fast time.



Olympic Trials 20K Qualifier
May 6, 2000

The Oregon City High School Track at Oregon City, Oregon was the location of the Olympic Trials 20K Qualifier on May 6, 2000.

The temperature at the start time was 50 F with a partly cloudy sky.

The judges were: Jim Bean (Head Judge), Lynn Ford, Bev LaVeck, Anne Whitaker. The apprentice judge was Mary Snyder.

Ian Whatley of South Carolina had a finishing time that qualified him for his fourth Olympic Trails.



Western Regional 10KM Track Championship
April 22, 2000

The West Seattle Stadium in West Seattle, WA was the site of the Western Regional 10KM Track Championship held on April 22, 2000.

The temperature at the start time was 45 F with an over cast sky. At the end of the race the temperature was 53F with a mostly clear sky.

The judges were: D.Hickman, M.Rudow, G.Robertson, J.Kavadas, B.Hickman.

The competion drew participants from Canada, Washington, Oregon and California with good conditions resulting in very good times. After the events, everyone celebrated Bev LaVeck's birthday.



Tax A Derby One Mile Racewalk
April 15, 2000

The Tax A Derby One Mile Racewalk was held on Saturday April 15, 2000 in Portland Oregon on the Lincoln High School 400 meter outside track.

The temperature at the start time was 45 F with a very light rain.

The judges were Marie VerMeer, Margaret Seewerker and Anne Whitaker for the women's racewalk. The judges for the men's racewalk were Marie VerMeer, Doug VerMeer and Fred Seewerker.

The participants in the one mile racewalk with the finishing position ( in 10 year age groups ) and finishing times were:

The second year of this event increased the distance from 1,040 meters to one mile by popular request of all of the participants as chance to recover from all the hard work put into preparing their income tax returns. Again, a big thank you to Carmen for the work she did as race director.



USATF Masters Indoor 3K Racewalk Championship, Boston MA
March 26, 2000

The USATF Masters Indoor 3K Racewalk Championship was held on Sunday March 26, 2000 in Boston MA.

The participants in the 3K racewalk event from Racewalkers Northwest with the finishing position ( in 5 year age groups ), finishing times and pace per mile was:

Congratulations to Anne on her third place finish and bringing back the bronze to the Pacific Northwest from Boston.



Top O'Tabor 3K Racewalk
March 18, 2000

The Top O'Tabor 3K Racewalk was held on Saturday March 18, 2000. The Top O'Tabor Racewalk is the only judged racewalk held anywhere in the world that is on top of a volcano. Participating in the Top O'Tabor is close to the same date as St. Patricks Day celebrations for anyone that might be concerned about a racewalk on top of a volcano.

It is the second year for this fun racewalk event with the participants doing 6 laps on a flat road course on the top of the Mt. Tabor volcano.

At the 9 AM start time, the day was cool, raining, with a slight breeze and a temperture of 45 F degrees.

The racewalk judges were: Anne Whitaker, Marie VerMeer and Margaret Seewerker.

The second year of this event was a success....a big thank you to Carmen for the work she did as race director as well as a thank you to the lap counters, timers and judges! Of special note, Joe Mallon was faster by 21 seconds compared to last year's Top O'Tabor Racewalk. Also, after the racewalk, Bud and Pat Morgan ( sometimes known as "Cafe Morgan" ) hosted a breakfast for the participants, judges, lap counters and timers.



Shamrock 8K Run
March 12, 2000

The Shamrock 8K Run was held in Portland Oregon on Sunday March 12, 2000. The Shamrock Run is a road course in down town Portland and a running event, however, Racewalkers Northwest members participate in the event as though it was a judged racewalk. Although Racewalk Northwest members are racewalking, we finish ahead of many runners.

At the 9 AM start time, the day was cool and over cast with a temperture of 40 F degrees.

20K Vancouver International 2000 Racewalk
March 5, 2000

The Vancouver International 2000 Racewalk was held on March 5, 2000 in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. It is the second year for this international racewalk event that is held at the same time as the Canadian Racewalking Team Trials for the Pan Am Cup. The racewalk distances are 2.5K, 5K, 10K, 20K and 50K.

At the start time, the day was cool, dry, sunny with a slight onshore breeze with a temperature of 8 degrees C.

The participants in the 20K racewalk event from Racewalkers Northwest with their finishing times were:

In the second year of this event, it has turned into a super event. Of note: Tim Berrett made Olympic "A" standard in the 50k with a time of 3:52.48. There were 39 excellent racewalkers that finished.



Champoeg 10K Racewalk Championship
February 19, 2000

The Champoeg 10K Racewalk Championship was held on February 19, 2000. It is an unjudged racewalk event that is held annually by ORRC as part of the Champoeg 10K and 30K Championship Run and Racewalk. The racewalk distance is 10K at the same time runners are doing either 10K or three laps on the 10K course for the 30K distance.

The day was perfect without any wind and a temperature of 40 F at the 9:00AM start. The course is in a park with a farm land setting bordering the Willamette River. The last 1000 meters included a significant down hill and up hill.

The race started promptly at 9:00AM with a little fog which lifted by the end of the race.

There were 20 racewalkers with 7 members from Racewalkers Northwest participating in the event.

The Racewalkers Northwest members, overall division finishing position ( open/master and men/women ), time and pace are:

Rob Frank continues his winning streak at the Champoeg Championship and received another great looking wall plaque for 2000 as well as getting the 1999 plaque.



Las Vegas 2000 Half Marathon Racewalk
February 6, 2000

The Las Vegas 2000 International Half Marathon Racewalk was held on February 6, 2000. It is a judged half marathon racewalk event that is held once a year.

The day was perfect without any wind and a temperature of 45 F at the 6:30AM start. The start point and the course was on a very flat surface road 13.1 miles south of Las Vegas.

The race started promptly at 6:30AM with the sunrise 9 minutes later with a very clear sky. The rising sun peeked over mountains in the east and cast their shadow across the valley and onto the mountains to the west. Participants wore timing chips to record their time.

The 94 finishing racewalkers came from USA, Canada and Europe. There were 6 members from Racewalkers Northwest participating in the event.

The Racewalkers Northwest members, overall division finishing position ( men/women ), total chip time and pace are:

Great Northwest Indoor Racewalk
February 6, 2000

The Great Northwest Indoor 1500 meter Racewalk Championship was held in Portland Oregon at the Expo Center at 10AM on February 6, 2000. It is a judged racewalk event that is held once a year. There were three qualified judges. The judges were Jim Bean, Peggy Squires and Marie VerMeer.

Since the event is held inside, there were ideal conditions. The 4 members from Racewalkers Northwest that participated in the event, finishing position and times were:

Doug VerMeer, 2, 7:55.76

Dick Vaughn, 3, 10:14.39

Anne Whitaker, 4, 10:33.78

Rob Frank set a new meet record requiring only 7 minutes, 17.81 seconds to complete the 1500 meters for a 7 minute and 49.7 second pace per mile.



Vancouver Lake Half Marathon
January 23, 2000

The Vancouver Lake Half Marathon was held on January 23, 2000. It is a half marathon running event held each year.

The day was cold without any wind at the 10AM start and during the event. The course was on the very flat surface roads in the Vancouver Lake area of Vancouver Washington.

Kim Miller and George Opsahl participated in the running event as racewalkers. Although the event was not judged, both Kim and George participated as though there were judges. The times for Kim and George were:

2000 20K ORRC Millennium
January 2, 2000

The January 2, 2000 event was held in Forest Grove, Oregon and is an annual 20KM running event. The day was cool and comfortable at the start of the event. The course was on the flat surface streets in the local area.

Kim Miller participated in the running event as a racewalker. Although the event was not judged, Kim participated as though there were judges. The time for Kim was:
